Theme Tuesday - Gold

Ok, so normally it's Theme Thursday, but Thursday is not only Thanksgiving - it is also my Golden birthday! (for those of you who don't know what that means, it means I turn 25 on the 25th.) And since I will be busy opening presents and stuffing my face, I am doing Theme Tuesday, with the the theme being Gold in celebration of my upcoming golden birthday.

Golden Birthday [mp3] - Anni Rossi ( Amazon / iTunes )

Golden Years [mp3] - David Bowie ( Amazon / iTunes )

Realms of Gold [mp3] - Hopewell ( Amazon / iTunes )

Black Gold Blues [mp3] - Laura Veirs ( Amazon / iTunes )

Gold Guns Girls [mp3] - Metric ( Amazon / iTunes )

Theme Thursday - Work

So these past few weeks have been kind of hellish for me work-wise. Thus, don't have much time today so I'm just doing a quick Theme Thursday - work! It's pretty much all I can think about right now, sorry guys. I know it's not all that creative, but we haven't done it yet and these are three pretty good songs.

Theme Thursday - Radio

In honor of Radio K (the University of Minnesota's radio station), from whom I "borrowed" my idea for Theme Thursday and who is going FM today (congrats!) I thought I would make "radio" the theme of the day. And man are there a lot of good songs for this theme. Feel free to list any songs you really like with the word "radio" in it (or about the radio) in the comments section. And of course there's also some great bands with "radio" in their name (ie Radiohead, TV on the Radio)

Talk Radio [mp3] - The Dandy Warhols - Earth to the Dandy Warhols (iTunes)

Boys on the Radio [mp3] - Hole - Celebrity Skin (iTunes)

On the Radio [mp3] - Regina Spektor - Begin to Hope (iTunes)

Tits on the Radio [mp3] - Scissors Sisters - Scissors Sisters (iTunes)

Car Radio [mp3] - Spoon - 30 Gallon Tank EP (iTunes)

Radio Christiane [mp3] - The Virgins - The Virgins (iTunes)

Theme Thursday - Flu

So for the first time in my life, I have the flu. It has not been pleasant. Thus my update for today will be quick. But out of curiosity I typed "flu" into my iTunes search bar to see what songs would come up. This was the only one that came up, but it's a good song. Anyone else got any good ones for "flu"? Not the easiest theme I've ever picked...

Bird Flu [mp3] - MIA - Kala (iTunes)

Theme Thursday: Covers

I'm officially bringing back Theme Thursday (I'm not sure if it was ever 'out,' but I'd like to think that I'm a trendsetter). This Thursday's theme is covers. From time to time, I crave the familiarity of the oldies but goodies. I have to say, it's a pretty unsatisfying experience...Inevitably, I find myself wishing, yearning, that these songs were imbued with the soul-searching angst of indie rock. And thus, I was determined to find some indie-awesome covers that had the best of both worlds: familiarity and soulful inflection. Here are my findings:

Can't Help Falling in Love [mp3] Ingrid Michaelson - "Be OK" (iTunes). I love Ingrid Michaelson with the fiery passion of a thousand suns. She's so phenomenal, and she lends her glister to this awesome cover of The King's old hit.

In My Life [mp3] Leah Siegel - "Beatles Complete on Ukulele, Vol. 1" (iTunes). This isn't the last you'll hear of Leah Siegal from me. I have fallen into a deep infatuation with her lyrical perspective, and find myself queueing her up over and over again. In My Life has just the right balance of old and new to make me swoon.

Make You Feel My Love [mp3] ADELE - "19" (iTunes). This British crooner helps me to love unrequited love (story of my life) with this cover of Bob Dylan's original. Make You Feel My Love lives in the land of covers, having been refab'd by such as Trisha Yearwood, Neil Diamond, Billy Joel and more...and so it's all the more incredible that ADELE's version is by far my favorite.

Sea of Love [mp3] Cat Power - "Juno" (iTunes). By far my favorite track off of the Juno soundtrack, which is saying a lot existing as it does in the sea of indie-awesomeness. The detached, old-time radio feel of Sea of Love makes waves of happiness swell somewhere deep down inside.

Handle Me With Care [mp3] Jenny Lewis with The Watson Twins - "Rabbit Fur Coat" (iTunes). I have long held that I will know when I have found my soul mate when I find someone who has a deep and abiding love for The Traveling Wilburys. When I found Jenny Lewis' rendition of Handle Me With Care, my standards tightened quite a bit...now Mr. Right has to know both The Traveling Wilburys and Jenny Lewis.

Such Great Heights [mp3] Iron & Wine - "Such Great Heights EP" (iTunes). This song is just the best I'm-irrationally-in-love song ever. And so, when I found this ridiculously mellow version of the song, I found myself plunged into a reverie where both I and he have freckles in our eyes.

Everybody Wants to Rule the World [mp3] Clare & The Reasons (iTunes). By far my favorite on this list, Clare Muldaur could woo me all day, everyday. *Sigh*

What a Wonderful World [mp3] The Innocence Mission - "Now the Day is Over" (iTunes). The perfect ending to a near-perfect list! What a Wonderful World makes me see the world through wonderfully hazy glasses, and makes me feel that all is right in life!

Theme Thursday - Home

I'm back from London. Part of me is sad but the other part of me is liking sleeping in my own bed and meals that cost less than $20. Unfortunately I didn't get to see any shows while I was there. It appeared that no one I liked was really playing and I didn't want to exorbitant amounts of money to go see bands I had never heard of. Plus I kind of just ran out of time. If you want to check out my pictures from London (above) and Brighton (below), click the links. As usual I took lots of photos, but I love the architecture so I couldn't resist. I also went to Bath, but I have to get those pictures from my friend as I didn't have my camera that day.

Since I'm "home sweet home" now, the theme for this week is home. Since I haven't posted in a while, I'm going to post a lot of songs and I'm going to post them as a .zip file.

Yankee Bayonet (I Will Be Home Then) - The Decemberists - "The Crane Wife" (iTunes)

Within a Mile of Home - Flogging Molly - "Within A Mile of Home" (iTunes)

Come on Home - Franz Ferdinand - "Franz Ferdinand" (iTunes)

Home - Great Northern - "Trading Twilight for Daylight" (iTunes)

Honey Come Home - Murder Mystery - "Are You Read for the Heartache... Cause Here It Comes" (iTunes)

Home 0207 - Plastic Operator - "Different Places" (iTunes)

Leave the City and Come Home - The Rakes - "Ten New Messages" (iTunes)

Own Your Own Home - Rogue Wave - "Asleep At Heaven's Gate" (iTunes)

Sunny Came Home - Shawn Colvin - "A Few Small Repairs" (iTunes)

Going Home - Shoot The Messenger - "Get On With It EP" (iTunes)

There's No Home For You Here - The White Stripes - "Elephant" (iTunes)

Home - Zero 7 - "When It Falls" (iTunes)

THE ZIP FILE

One more thing - tomorrow night (Friday) one of my favorite NYC bands is playing at The Village Underground: Julius C. Also playing with them is Kid:Nap:Kin (who are having their CD release show), Sentient Machine and The Hollow Sound. Doors at 6:30pm. $10, ALL AGES. Julius C goes on around 8:30pm and I hear they'll be playing some new stuff. It's sure to be a spectacular show, as always.

Theme Thursday - Stop

So much to do, so little time. That's why the theme for today is "stop." As always, please feel free to leave suggestions for songs that fit the theme, or suggestions for future themes. And, speaking of stopping, I have a friend visiting for a bit, so I may not get to update much over the next week... But I'll do my best.

Stop! Stop! Stop! [mp3] - The Hard Lessons - "Gasoline" (iTunes unavailable)

Stop [mp3] - Spice Girls - "Spiceworld" (iTunes)

Don't Stop Me Now [mp3] - Queen - "Greatest Hits I" (iTunes)

Not Gonna Stop [mp3] - The Pendletons - "Oh, Me!" (iTunes)

And if I don't get a chance to update beforehand, Happy St. Patrick's day everyone!

Theme Thursday - School

A lot of my friends right now are facing the end of their school careers and their advancement into the real world, or the pressure/anticipation of waiting to see where they got into grad school. It seems like that's a lot of what our conversations revolve around lately, and well I try to offer them some comfort since I went through it last year, I must admit that there are times when I wish homework was still my biggest responsibility. So the theme for today is school. As always, please feel free to leave suggestions for songs that fit the theme or for future themes.

Mandy Goes to Med School [mp3] - The Dresden Dolls - "Yes, Virginia..." (iTunes)

Highschool Lover [mp3] - Air - "The Virgin Suicides" (iTunes)

We Rule The School [mp3] - Belle & Sebastian - "Tigermilk" (iTunes)

Beauty School Drop-Out [mp3] - Frankie Avalon - "Grease Motion Picture Soundtrack" (iTunes)

Theme Thursday - Bombs Away

Today's theme is "bomb." Not for any real reason (though I guess the violence in the world would be reason enough). But really, it's just that I was scanning through my music and I decided to close my eyes and pick a song by pointing to it, and I ended up with "I'm the Bomb" by Electric Six. Turns out it was a good pick, as there are lots of good songs that fit the theme. As always, feel free to leave suggestions for songs that fit the theme or for future themes.

I'm the Bomb [mp3] - Electric Six - "Fire" (iTunes)

The Bomb [mp3] - The Bucketheads - "Fired up!" (iTunes)

Bomb Yourself [mp3] - TV on the Radio - "Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes" (iTunes)

Spanish Bombs [mp3] - The Clash - "London Calling" (iTunes)

You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb [mp3] - Spoon - "Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga" (iTunes)

B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad) [mp3] - Outkast - "Stankonia" (iTunes)

Gender Bombs [mp3] - The Stills - "Logic Will Break Your Heart" (iTunes)

Bomb.Repeat.Bomb. [mp3] - Ted Leo & The Pharmacists - "Living With the Living" (iTunes)

Louder Than A Bomb [mp3] - Tiga - "Sexor" (iTunes)

That Tiga song is pretty hilarious. I think he's trying to be the next Right Said Fred or something. And a random observation: when you look at the word "bomb" over and over, it starts to look really weird and not like a real word...

Theme Thursday - Tango

Today's theme is the tango. In musicals (particularly movie musicals) my favorite scenes and songs often seem to involve the tango. So today's list of songs is going to largely be from musicals.

El Tango De Roxanne [mp3] - Moulin Rouge (iTunes)

Cell Block Tango [mp3] - Chicago (iTunes)

Tango: Maureen [mp3] - Rent (iTunes)

And one non-musical song:

Van Tango [mp3] - Franz Ferdinand - "Franz Ferdinand" (iTunes)

Theme Thursday - Love

Since today is Valentine's day, the theme for today is love. And for those of you say "St. Valentine was a murderer and Valentine's day is a fake holiday invented by greeting card companies," I say, "yes, it is, but Coca-Cola invented the Santa Claus we know and love, so what's your point?" It's so interesting to me how people "rebel against consumerism" for this one day each year, but really they're just bitter. Besides, even though it can suck for single people (especially single girls, of which I've been one many a Valentine's day), what's wrong with having yet one more day to celebrate and do something special? And just think about all the delicious candy that's going to go on sale tomorrow. Mmmmmmm... Candy. Any holiday that revolves around chocolate can't be too bad in my book.

So that's the theme for the day and maybe the plethora of good music I am about to unleash will cheer you anti-Valentine's day people up (I've actually had a somewhat terrible day myself thanks to the lovely Metro Transit Authority and Con Ed). Instead of just finding songs with the word "love" in the songs for today though, I am going to post songs that I think are really romantic.

Umbrella [mp3] - Rihanna featuring Jay-Z - "Good Girl Gone Bad" (iTunes) - Yes, I know. You indie snobs reading this are probably vomiting right now. But it really is a sweet song. It's one of the few pop songs these days that isn't just about f***ing someone's brains out (though you can't really tell that from the music video... but oh well). Listen to the lyrics. "Now that it's raining more than ever, know what we'll still have each other. You can stand under my umbrella." It's actually a very nice, romantic, simple concept for a song. And yes, it's catchy as hell.

Song No. 6 [mp3] - Ane Brun featuring Ron Sexsmith - "A Temporary Dive" (iTunes). A sweet, pretty song about how it would be easy to write a song about someone. "I would spend three or four lines on describing your eyes. And then the next three or four lines on the dimples of your smile. And then I would tell the world about the way you hold my hand, and they would understand." Aaawwwwww...

You Picked Me [mp3] - A Fine Frenzy - "One Cell in the Sea" (iTunes). This song is very close to being too cheesy, but it's a pretty song and overall I like the sentiment it expresses of finding someone special amongst the millions of people in the world.

Oh, It Is Love [mp3] - Hellogoodbye - "Zombies! Aliens! Vampires! Dinosaurs!" (iTunes). I actually wanted to post Here (In Your Arms), a sweet almost dance-able song about one of my favorite things - cuddling. I also like how how it emphasizes the joy in even the smallest of touches, like your cheeks brushing. But I can't post that one, so I'm posting this one instead, a very cute alternative.

Spoon Me [mp3] - Ohm - "Star Fall" (iTunes unavailable). I think the title is self-explanatory.

Fading in C# Minor [mp3] - Una - "One" (iTunes). For most of you this song might not be that romantic, but - as someone currently in a long-distance relationship - the longing that this song expresses is something that I can relate to.

Love Song [mp3] - Sheila Nicholls - "Wake" (iTunes unavailable). I was torn between this and her song Bread and Water (another song with an intense sense of longing - "it's bread and water without you...") but I already posted Bread and Water somewhat recently, and this song is a nice, positive song about love.

Thank You [mp3] - Dido - "No Angel" (iTunes). I almost didn't want to post this because it was so overplayed years ago, but it really is a great love song about how that special someone can magically make everything ok. Dido has a lot of great love songs like Here With Me, Take My Hand, and the rather sad White Flag.

These Words (I Love You, I Love You) [mp3] - Natasha Bedingfield - "Unwritten" (iTunes). Another song I was hesitant to post because of overplay when it came out (and I know you hipsters are probably trying not to throw up again). Also another song about writing a love song. And she's right, there's no better way to say "I love you."

My Man (Medley) [mp3] - Regina Spektor - "Live at Bull Moose" (iTunes unavailable). A mildly disturbing song about a very unhealthy relationship, but I think that everyone experiences this kind of totally unhealthy blind love at some point.

Fairytale [mp3] - Sara Bareilles - "Careful Confessions" (iTunes). This is a song for all you bitter V-day haters out there. A sasssy, cynical commentary on the unrealistic romance of fairytales. Again, I was torn between this and her song Love Song, another slightly bitter song ("I'm not going to write you a love song cuz you asked for it, cuz you need one..."). Something tells me Ms. Bareilles has not had the best of luck with men.

Fair [mp3] - Ben Folds Five - "Whatever and Ever Amen" (iTunes)

Theme Thursday - The Sea

Today's theme is the sea and I'm posting a nice mix of lots of fun songs to last you through the weekend because I am going out of town and will most likely not be posting again until Monday. Calm Go the Wild Seas [mp3] - Beulah - "When Your Heartstrings Break" (iTunes)

Theme Thursday - Cold

Baby, it's cold outside! Actually this winter has been rather mild until recently (and you'd think since I'm from Minnesota, this would seem like nothing). But for someone who has a nice long walk to work, like me, it's still pretty freakin' cold. So that's the theme for today. As always, feel free to leave future theme suggestions, or song suggestions that fit this theme. Special thanks to the person who posted a video link last week!

Cold Hard B**** [mp3] - Jet - "Get Born" (iTunes)

In the Cold Cold Night [mp3] - The White Stripes - "Elephant" (iTunes unavailable)

Colder than the Coldest Winter [mp3] - The Dandy Warhols - "Odditorium or Warlords from Mars" (iTunes)

Cold Hands [mp3] - Black Lips - "Good Bad Not Evil" (iTunes)

Hot 'n' Cold [mp3] - Basement Jaxx - "Kish Kash" (iTunes)

And on one final note, this is the reason that I am so glad I am not Britney Spears (I realize you are probably saying "what did she do this time?" but the link is an article about how much money everyone's made off of her). Personally, I think we should all thank her for stimulating the economy a bit (and goodness knows it could use some stimulating right now).

Theme Thursday - Waltz

It feels like at most of the concerts I've gone to in the past month at least one band has incorporated a waltz into their set. It also happens that this waltz is typically one of my favorite songs that they perform. While I unfortunately don't have recordings of any of the waltzes I've seen performed live, I am still going to make that the theme for today. As always, please feel to leave future theme ideas or additional songs that fit the theme.

Waltz for Koop [mp3] - Koop - "Waltz for Koop" (iTunes)

Waltz (Better than Fine) [mp3]- Fiona Apple - "Extraordinary Machine" (iTunes)

Sad Songs and Waltzes [mp3] - Cake - "Fashion Nugget" (iTunes)

Penny Waltz [mp3] - Loe & the Nastys - "Loe & the Nastys" (iTunes)

Hometown Waltz [mp3] - Rufus Wainwright - "Want Two" (iTunes)

Theme Thursday - Christmas

So I meant to do this post yesterday but I ran out of time and then my internet wasn't working and then I was on a plane to Minneapolis. So here it is, a little late, Theme Thursday (on a Friday... oops...). I told you I would make it up to you that I haven't posted as much music lately, so here it is - a rather eclectic mix of 20 Christmas songs for your enjoyment over the next few days leading up to Christmas:

All I Want For Christmas Is You [mp3] - Mariah Carey

Happy Christmas (War is Over) [mp3] - The Alarm

Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree [mp3] - Brenda Lee

Little Drummer Boy [mp3] - The Dandy Warhols

A Holly Jolly Christmas [mp3] - Burl Ives

Deck the Halls [mp3] - The Essex Green

And from my old high school choir (if you're in the mood for something a little more classical):

Wacky Wednesday - Christmas Edition

To make up for the fact that I haven't posted much music lately, I am going to do a Theme Thursday Christmas extravaganza tomorrow. In fact, I'm posting so many songs that I have decided to take some of them (the sillier ones) and post them today so that it's not quite so overwhelming tomorrow. So here you go - some whacky Christmas songs.

Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis [mp3] - Neko Case - "New Coat of Paint: Songs of Tom Waits" (iTunes). This song isn't particularly silly but it has a funny title.

Oi to the World [mp3] - No Doubt (iTunes)

a Christmas medley [mp3] by Flipp (I think). I have no idea what it's called or what album it is from. A friend of mine made a "Christmas Carnage" mix CD one year, and this was on it. I'm not even 100% sure it's Flipp but it sounds like Flipp and my friend was a big Flipp fan. If anyone knows the title, artist and/or album, please feel free to tell me.

This Christmas [mp3] - Louis XIV (iTunes)

Merry Christmas (I Don't Want to Fight Tonight) [mp3] - The Ramones - "Brain Drain" (iTunes)

Theme Thursday - Waiting

AAAAHHHH!!!!! REMY ZERO IS KIND OF BACK TOGETHER!!!!! AAAAAHHHHH!!!!!

Ok, sorry, I just had to get that out of my system. You're going to have to excuse my giddy schoolgirlness this post because these guys are possibly my favorite band of all time so I am super excited. I was browsing myspace yesterday and it said that they added new music and I was like "what?!" because they've been broken up since 2003 (there were rumors in 2006 that they were considering getting back together but then that didn't happen) and I went to their profile and it now says they've been together "1989-2003, 2007-???" Hooray!!!!! The "new music" that was added was just a song called Christmas off their self-titled album from 10 years ago. But in their "about Remy Zero" section it says: "The story so far: We formed in Birmingham, AL in 1989. We took a break in 2003. It seems now we've found the spirit to make music together again. Whatever we do as a group and seperately we'll try to keep you posted on here. Stay tuned..." AAAAAHHHHHH!!!! I'm SO EXCITED!!!!! I was so heartbroken when they broke up.

Anyway, so since I've been waiting for this to happen for a long time, the theme this week is waiting. As always, please feel free to leave ideas for future themes.

Save Me [mp3] - Remy Zero - "The Golden Hum" (iTunes) - there are lyrics that say "I've been waiting for you" and I wanted to include them...

Waiting for Magic (Total Remix 7") [mp3] - Ace of Base - "The Sign" (iTunes)

Waiting [mp3] - Cake - "Pressure Chief" (iTunes)

Waiting for Your Letter [mp3] - Cary Brothers - "Waiting for Your Letter EP" (iTunes)

Waiting for Life [mp3] - Once on this Island (iTunes)

Waiting to Die [mp3] - Zero 7 - "The Garden" (iTunes)

Don't Make Me Wait
[mp3] - Locksley - "Don't Make Me Wait" (iTunes)

Theme Thursday - Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Here's to one of the most under-appreciated holidays of the year (it seems like now it's only celebrated as "the start of Christmas"). It's always been one of my favorite holidays, so today's theme is Thanks(giving).

Thank You [mp3] - Dido - "No Angel" (iTunes)

Thanksgiving Day [mp3] - Do As Infinity - "Gates of Heaven" (iTunes)

Thank U [mp3] - Alanis Morissette - "Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie" (iTunes)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Stuff yourselves silly!
