Wacky Wednesday - 1.16.08

Last night I saw A Well-Founded Fear at the IFC as part of their "Stranger than Fiction" series. It's not a new movie or anything. It came out in 2000 I believe. But if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. It's a documentary about the INS and the process of applying for political asylum. Of course, that process changed drastically after the documentary was made. But it's still really interesting and very well made. You laugh, you cry, etc. Apparently the filmmakers are now working on a documentary about Homeland Security. I'm sure that film will be quite interesting as well. Keep your eyes peeled for it, though I don't think it will be out for a while.

Anyway, on to the music. It's been a while since I've done a "Wacky Wednesday," so that is what I will do today. Here are some entertaining/amusing/wacky/silly/fun songs:

Milk is Milk [mp3] - Parker Paul - "Lemon-Lime Room" (iTunes)

Dreamin About Bein Well-Hung Blues [mp3] - Everything, Now! (iTunes unavailable)

The Goth Tarts [mp3] - The Muggabears - "Night Choreography" (iTunes)

Wacky Wednesday - Christmas Edition

To make up for the fact that I haven't posted much music lately, I am going to do a Theme Thursday Christmas extravaganza tomorrow. In fact, I'm posting so many songs that I have decided to take some of them (the sillier ones) and post them today so that it's not quite so overwhelming tomorrow. So here you go - some whacky Christmas songs.

Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis [mp3] - Neko Case - "New Coat of Paint: Songs of Tom Waits" (iTunes). This song isn't particularly silly but it has a funny title.

Oi to the World [mp3] - No Doubt (iTunes)

a Christmas medley [mp3] by Flipp (I think). I have no idea what it's called or what album it is from. A friend of mine made a "Christmas Carnage" mix CD one year, and this was on it. I'm not even 100% sure it's Flipp but it sounds like Flipp and my friend was a big Flipp fan. If anyone knows the title, artist and/or album, please feel free to tell me.

This Christmas [mp3] - Louis XIV (iTunes)

Merry Christmas (I Don't Want to Fight Tonight) [mp3] - The Ramones - "Brain Drain" (iTunes)

Making this short because somehow even though I'm on "vacation" I have all sorts of work to do. Here are some songs that will hopefully entertain you on this Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

Take My Hand [mp3] - Jennifer Gentle - "The Midnight Room" (iTunes)

You've Been Faithful to Us Clouds [mp3] - Half-Handed Cloud - "Halos and Lassos" (iTunes)

Wacky Wednesday - 10.24.07

Going to keep this short because I have a lot to do before my twin comes to visit me tomorrow. Here are some wacky songs to ease the dreariness of this Wednesday.

Here Come the Mannequins [mp3] - One Ring Zero - "Wake Them Up" (iTunes)

Code Monkey [mp3] - Jonathan Coulton - "Thing a Week Three" (iTunes)

Watskeburt?! [mp3] - De Jeudg Van Tegenwoordig (iTunes unavailable)

Tata dahlings.

Wacky Wednesday - 10.10.07

This week is the busiest week I've had since I graduated from college. Thus, I am posting later than usual. My apologies.

Here are some wacky songs to get you through the stresses of the week on this hump day.

Detachable Penis [mp3] - King Missile - "Happy Hour" (iTunes). This one's for you, Mom.

Tiny Cities Made of Ashes [mp3] - Modest Mouse - "The Moon & Antarctica" (iTunes). From before they were popular, not that I have anything against popular. I just feel cool that I knew of them before they were.

Liquid Dreams [mp3] - O-Town - "O-Town" (iTunes). Yes, that's right. I went there.

Good luck with the rest of your week everyone. Tata dahlings.

Wacky Wednesday - 9.26.07

Time for a second installation of "Wacky Wednesday" because sometimes music isn't high art, it isn't asking the deep questions about life. Sometimes it's just entertaining. These are songs that make me smile/laugh because, frankly, they're just kind of silly. I'm going to dedicate this to my twin, Lisa, as she introduced me to most of these songs.

The Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun [mp3] - Julie Brown - "Goddess in Progress" (iTunes unvavailable). This is a classic 80s song, down to the fact that she uses the names Buffy and Mitzy. And it's hilarious in that really terrible kind of way. Sadly, I don't think this song would ever get made today what with all the school shootings.

Poisoning Pigeons in the Park
[mp3] - Tom Lehrer - "in concert" (iTunes unavailable). I hate pigeons pretty much more than any other animal in the world (if you don't include bugs and snakes), so I love this song. I never used to want to harm any creature, but then this stupid pigeon perched itself outside my window every morning at 6am for about 4 months and made the most wretched noises. If it wasn't doing it every morning I would've thought it was dying. After I while, I wished it was.

I Know an Old Lady
[mp3] - ACDA College Men's Choir - "ACDA Festival 2001" (iTunes unavailable). So I used to be a total choir geek... Still would be if I had a choir to be in. This was from a choir festival I attended long ago. It's a classical and hilarious version of the children's song we're probably all familiar with that starts out "I know an old lady who swallowed a fly..."

Wacky Wednesday - 8.8.07

Today I'm going to post songs that I like because they are just really funny or wacky or silly. Because, like this article I read in Entertainment Weekly today, I agree that sometimes music shouldn't have to be about "high art," but it should just be whatever makes you happy. And these songs make me smile.

Grace Kelly (mp3) - Mika - Life in Cartoon Motion (iTunes). I don't really feel the need to say anything about this song. Just listen to it. You'll see.

Two for the Price of One - Abba - The Visitors (iTunes). Ok, so I can't actually post this one because I only have it in a protected file (stupid iTunes...) and I can't find it anywhere in a post-able format. But I wanted to tell you guys it's out there and it's great and most people have never heard of it because it's not really one of their better known songs. It's a song kind of about the personal ads. And it's also one of the catchiest songs ever. Seriously, it will get stuck in your head for days.

What You Want (mp3) - Mandy Moore - So Real (iTunes). Best underage stripper song ever... I think at one point Mandy Moore offered to reimburse anyone who bought this CD. While I can kind of understand why she might not be so proud of it, I still love the CD because it's hilarious and fun. And she was like, what, 15 and completely not in control of her own career? So don't worry Mandy, you have nothing to be ashamed of. And frankly, I like her better as an actor anyway.

It's Raining Men (mp3) - The Weather Girls - Success (iTunes). I always knew this song (everybody at least kind of knows it), but I had never really listened to it very closely until recently and I actually laughed out loud on the subway listening to it a few days ago and people looked at me like I was crazy. Listen to the beginning. I love the talking in the background. "How low girl?" "What sources now?" haha. Maybe I'm really easily amused, but I mean, the premise of the song is pretty funny too.

Ok, hopefully these songs provided you a little laughter to get through the rest of the week. I know I needed it today. It was a rough day, what with the crazy storms last night and all. I spent more time commuting today than actually working... So yay for fun music that gets us through the 2-hour subway ride that is only supposed to be 25 minutes. Tata dahlings.
