The opening night film of AFI Docs 2017 was Icarus. I must say, I was surprised to see them pick a sports film as the opener, but as I learned more about the film, the choice began to make more sense. The film starts out as a sort of Supersize Me on steroids (and I mean literally on steroids). Amateur endurance cyclist Bryan Fogel decides he's going to start doping to show how Lance ArmstrongUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3500880875636508312.post-23258531776743659442017-06-21T15:23:00.000-04:002017-06-21T15:23:02.816-04:00AFI Docs - An Inconvenient Sequel
I have to first admit I never did see An Inconvenient Truth, but I'm not someone who needs to be convinced of the urgency of climate change. At AFI Docs this weekend, I did have the privilege of seeing An Inconvenient Sequel, the 10-years-later look at how much more urgent it's become. The film follows Al Gore as he educates people on how to be climate activists all over the world, and then Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3500880875636508312.post-69219862280340870352017-06-17T11:30:00.000-04:002017-06-17T11:30:20.127-04:00AFI Docs 2017 - Nowhere To Hide
Nowhere To Hide is a film about life in the dangerous "triangle of death" in central Iraq after the US pulls out. It is told from the perspective of Nori Sharif, a nurse in Jalawla. At first the film starts with him sharing the stories of people he knows whose lives were destroyed by the US war. But as Al Qaeda and ISIS begin to cause increasingly more havoc in the area, the story becomes moreUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3500880875636508312.post-46061026216985975542017-06-16T18:30:00.000-04:002017-06-16T18:30:09.705-04:00AFI Docs 2017 - No Man's Land
I must admit I was a little hesitant to see No Man's Land. The film is about the armed standoff at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Oregon, led by the Bundy brothers. Part of me didn't want to give these radicals any more attention than they had already gotten. But I went and saw it anyway, and I'm so very glad I did.

Rainbrother's upcoming album, "Tales From the Drought," isn't just music - it's a musical experience.
Rainbrother is fronted by the former frontman for The Migrant - Bjarke Bendtsen - and the sound is both new and familiar all at once.
The vast expanse of musical influences are impossible to categorize, but the first half of the album's strongest musical influence almost sounds like it's Karthikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04709487278907105869noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3500880875636508312.post-68828999924924736122017-01-10T08:30:00.000-05:002017-01-10T08:30:02.156-05:00Album Review: Griff's Room Band - Heartbreak/Desire
Griff's Room Band sounds a lot like what it would be if Dave Matthews Band and OAR had a baby as a band. If you know me, you know that's actually one of the best compliments I could give a band!

This album is the height of noise, mixed with the perfect amount of garage. Not "noise" like "random sounds" but "noise" like "The Velvet Underground" meets "The Melvins" "noise." Music writing is a very personal endeavor, and the best you can do is to find someone whose tastes you share so you can then trust their opinion. As a consequence, music reviews - especially "best of" or "top albums" posts tend to tell you more about the writer than the music. With that being said, here's my top 10 albums of the year. Feel free to psychoanalyze what that says about me as you Karthikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04709487278907105869noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3500880875636508312.post-62660145697429905132016-12-16T16:30:00.000-05:002016-12-16T16:30:03.433-05:00Stimulating Station Seeds

Wyndham's new EP can be described as "wow, that's good." Not quite fitting into a single genre of music, the four-song EP goes from mellow acoustic guitar (the wistful "Morning After"), to Black Key's type riffs on the guitar in "Shot Up," to the almost ukulele sounding chords of "Gypsy," and ends on the jazzy "Bad Luck."
However, to talk only about the instrumentals is to sell his lyrics Karthikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04709487278907105869noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3500880875636508312.post-84394913659801936912016-12-09T15:30:00.000-05:002016-12-09T15:30:16.453-05:00Stimulating Station Seeds

Here's your "station seeds" if you're looking for a couple of good sounds to build a station around.
The Chainsmokers: the best part about this station, beyond all the great songs themselves, is that they've collaborated with so many different people that the station brings in variety just from that. You'll get EDM, house, electropop, trap, and even some good old fashioned pop music on Karthikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04709487278907105869noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3500880875636508312.post-30015973684140965752016-12-02T11:30:00.000-05:002016-12-03T15:18:17.173-05:00Friday's Song List

While November was full of great concerts for me like Josh Radin, Damien Jurado, T/N/A/F, Ingrid Michaelson, Girls Guns and Glory, and Starfucker, December is going to be a relatively chill month for live music. (But don't sleep on the new Album releases, like the Hamilton Mixtape and Childish Gambino's Awaken, My Love!)
So, for now, I've only got one show planned for this month, but it'sKarthikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04709487278907105869noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3500880875636508312.post-87693316460752659652016-12-02T10:00:00.000-05:002016-12-03T15:19:21.775-05:00STRFKR at 9:30 Club

Kelsey Waldon
I hadn't heard much about Kelsey Waldon before this show, but I did like what I had heard of her on NPR. She's got a voice right between Alison Krauss and Loretta Lynn, with the perfect amount of Kentucky twang to straddle the line. Her song "All By Myself" deserves to be put in the pantheon of the country-ish category of "men, who needs them?" songs like Carrie Underwood's "Karthikhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04709487278907105869noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3500880875636508312.post-53434446543771095452016-11-29T16:30:00.000-05:002016-11-30T10:40:13.212-05:00Band Spotlight: The Pressure Kids
There are some bands that can only really be described as "indie," and Nashville's The Pressure Kids are just indie. If you love indie, you'll love them. If you don't, I'd still tell you to give their music a listen, because it's just so good.
