Pree

http://www.thekorarecords.com/photos/pree-park.jpg

On March 24, Pree is releasing their debut EP Chopping Block, a collection of songs that are reminiscent of Modest Mouse, Joanna Newsom and the piano ingenuity of Regina Spektor. After giving their 5-song EP a listen, I'm really excited to hear more from them. "Speak Warmly" is the standout track for me, a gentle folk ballad with a small sea-shanty flair amplified by the vocals of May Tabol and a chorus that soothes the soul by its perfect coupling of the lyrics "And I won't hold my tongue, but I'll speak warmly when they come" with the picked acoustic guitar. "Heaven Is A Drag" is already on my list of songs to listen to while walking through the streets of St. Paul in the spring time, and "In the Parlor" is more of a relaxed on-the-porch toe-tapping number that has been selected as the group's first debut single. All in all, Pree melds indie folk with a quirky introspection of the soul and their sound is simply refreshingly homespun. Make sure to check them out if they're coming to a town near you this spring.

Open Happiness

Coca-Cola's latest marketing campaign is "Open Happiness," and in late January of this year it was announced at the MIDEM International Music Market and Conference in Cannes that a track would be released featuring a collaboration amongst several artists. Those artists include Cee-Lo (of Gnarles Barkley), Travis McCoy (Gym Class Heroes), Brendon Urie (Panic At the Disco), Patrick Stump (Fall Out Boy), Janelle Monae and the infamous Butch Walker. The track itself is uplifting and perfectly produced, but it sounds like it's trying to be the perfect blend of Train, Switchfoot and The Newsboys, leading me to wonder why Coca-Cola set out to recruit big-name musicians in this era of trying to be the first to highlight unknown sounds. At any rate, enjoy the song now before it becomes "that commercial song," cause it's rather decent when its not being used as a tactic to make you feel thirsty.

Free event at Corio (NYC) tonight!

One of the perks of writing a music blog is that we get to go to a lot of concerts. Well, I am currently expanding my role as a music blogger into event promotion so that I can offer you, my New York readers, the opportunity to see shows for free or discounted. The first event is tonight at Corio, a chic burlesque lounge in SoHo (W. Broadway and Grand), so come celebrate Ash Wednesday (or a belated Mardi Gras) with me! It's an acoustic night, featuring actress Bridget Barkan and Jesus Speed guitarist Nes Panlilio. There will also be a DJ playing when they're not. Doors are at 11pm, which I realize is a little late for a Wednesday night for those of you who have to work in the morning, but it should be a really chill, cool night. Plus it's FREE, just dress nice (it's a classy place) and say you're with Emma at the door. Hope to see some of you there! I would love to meet some of my readers. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions.

A Year Later...

And I am *still* obsessed with this song. I watch the music video about 9 times a day. You music savvy people have probably already heard/seen it, but I've come across to many people who haven't, so consider it posted. The lesser-known Adele cover is also really great.

p.s. I am aware of the Katy Perry cover, but to me it doesn't come close to Adele's.

Elizabeth and the Catapult

Brooklyn delivers yet again, ladies and gents. Elizabeth Ziman is the lead singer of the New York indie group Elizabeth & the Catapult and apparently had my childhood, growing up with a love for the classic composers like Debussy and for the modern greats like the Beatles, an influential combo that eventual lead to the formation of her "Baroque pop" sound. Indeed, Elizabeth & the Catapult switch from indie pop/rock to classical-laced anti-folk with the greatest of ease, ranging from the toe-tapping "Race You" with the triumphant horns to the rich and intricate vocal/piano duo dance in "Variations on Chopin." Its almost as if this group is after my heart, catering to my indie side while delivering a delicious side dish of all the great composers I was raised on. Elizabeth's voice is honeyed and assured, Peter Lalish's guitar is plucky in all the right places, and Dan Molad's drums keep everything moving merrily right along. Their song "Race You" is featured in the movie New In Town and they will also be making the rounds at SXSW this year, so all you lucky folk who get to be in Austin, make sure to catch their act.

Under the Influence of Giants

Under the Influence of Giants is an indie/alternative band that I have grown to fall for over the years. Their EP Heaven Is Full and the self-titled LP came out in 2006, and much to everyone's excitement, it looks now like they have a new album that they are currently working on that will be out soon. Unfortch, UTIOG doesn't seem to update their myspace often (their last update was in July) so I have no idea when that album will be released or what it will sound like, but hopefully the whole album will be as great as this track is, cause I can't stop listening to it:

BAND DATE: Flight of the Conchords, meet Garfunkel and Oates

While perusing the internets for ukulele stuff (as I have just gotten my very own ukulele) , I stumbled across this ADORABLE video:

That's Kate Micucci, actress/comedian/musician, the "Oates" of an amazing duo called Garfunkel and Oates. Actress Riki Lindhome is the "Garfunkel" (those of you who watch Big Bang Theory may recognize her), and together these two create wonderfully quirky and hilarious songs. Case in point:

Present Face - Garfunkel & Oates [mp3]

While listening to them, I couldn't help but think that these two are the perfect girl counterpart to Flight of the Conchords...

Friends [mp3]

So in conclusion: these bands really need to date and make sweet, sweet jams together, all night long. Don't you agree?

Fujiya & Miyagi @ Le Poisson Rouge

Tuesday night I had the pleasure of seeing Fujiya & Miyagi play at Le Poisson Rouge. First up was School of Seven Bells, who I actually don't feel I can judge all that fairly because the sound mixing was just SO terrible. You could hardly hear their voices at all and it just kind of sounded like a wall of sound, at least from where I was standing.

Luckily the sound mixing was better for Fujiya & Miyagi (plus their vocals are supposed to sound kind of muted I think). They played a pretty long set, and they got better and better as they went along, building their energy, as well as the audience's, through a well-crafted setlist. I like this whole video integration thing that a lot of bands are starting to do lately. Fujiya & Miyagi had some cool animation stuff going on, always with dice. You can tell that they're really into their music, which is great, although if I had one wish it would be that they smiled occasionally. But overall, a good show.

They still have plenty of tour dates left:
2/19 - 9:30 Club - Washington DC
2/20 - Cats Cradle - Carrboro NC
2/21 - 40 Watt Club - Athens GA
2/23 - Back Booth - Orlando FL
2/24 - Club Downunder - Tallahassee FL
2/25 - Spanish Moon - Baton Rouge LA
2/27 - Emos Alternative Lounge - Austin TX
2/28 - Palladum Loft - Dallas X
3/2 - Rhythm Room - Phoenix AZ
3/3 - Echoplex - Los Angeles CA
3/5 - The Independent - San Francisco CA
3/6 - Doug Fir Lounge - Portland OR

Caitlin Crosby

Cute tough girl + just slightly husky vocals + infectious pop = Caitlin Crosby, a L.A. singer-songwriter who does it all. She's worked with Babyface, she's an actress, she's released her debut EP in November, she hosts a website encouraging people to embrace and be truly happy with themselves (loveyourflawz.com) whilst being a model/songwriter for Levi Jeans AND she is making the rounds at SXSW this year! It seems that this is quite a lot for someone who just debuted, so I think it's safe to say keep an eye out on this one. "Still Have My Heart" is the first single off of the upcoming album that'll be released sometime this spring.

Lily Allen

Lily Allen's got some new mp3s swirling around the net these days from her latest album It's Not Me, It's You...and I gotta say, I'm a fan. The album came out this last week and it looks like it's already traveling up the charts. I posted her song "The Fear" back in June, but to be quite honest, it was a shabby version, so enjoy the better quality this round.

Holiday Hash - Love and Presidents

I know there is an anti-Valentine's day movement astir, but I for one could never hate a day that revolves largely around chocolate and treating yourself to nice things (or being treated by others as the case may or may not be). And since V-day falls this year on the same weekend as Presidents' Day, it makes it a lovely three day weekend for everyone. So I post these songs in honor of this weekend that I hope you all find a way to enjoy, whether you're single or not.

Headlights

Em has posted them before, but as they are one of the many talented bands playing at SXSW this year, I think now is the perfect time to carve out a little post just for them. Headlights is a group that mixes homespun grew-up-on-the-farm innocence with humble indie pop influence. In fact, they even recorded in a farmhouse. Headlights incorporate that wonderful gentle boy/girl vocal sound with in a dash of electronica amongst the 60's-esque crunchy guitars that are perfect listening for on the road or while doing work, cause these songs truly elevate one's mood. Their last album, Some Racing, Some Stopping, is a bit of a departure from their more indie rock sound and contains some true catchy indie pop tunes, with Cherry Tulips being a favorite of mine. TJ Lipple remixed the version below for Polyvinyl's Remixes release and it suits the song quite well. It has certainly been played plenty on my itunes, so I suggest you check them out and their tour dates for March below.

And, of course, in case it wasn't apparent already, we got a Giveaway going on...

Tour Dates:
Mar 11 - Stonefly - Milwaukee, WI
Mar 12 - Empty Bottle - Chicago, IL
Mar 13 - Southgate House - Cincinnati, OH
Mar 14 - Canopy Club - Urbana, IL
Mar 15 - Bluebird - St. Louis, MO
Mar 16 - Mojo's - Columbia, MO
Mar 17 - Lola's - Ft. Worth, TX

Videos that Look the Same

I know the title of the segment is usually "Bands that sound the same" but I couldn't help but see this video and be reminded of another slightly freaky Scandinavian dance-song video I posted a while back and so I thought it deserved a post. Observe:

This new one (the first one) is by Norwegian band Casio kids. The one I posted a while back is by Swedish band Peter, Bjorn & John.

And once again, don't forget about our giveaway contest! The deadline is Sunday!

Matt Jones @ Union Hall

Last night I went to see one of my favorite singer-songwriters who you regular readers are probably familiar with by now because I'm totally obsessed with his music: Matt Jones. This time he had violinist and cellist with him, and that was quite a treat. The cello is a very prevalent instrument on his album, so it made the music sound so much richer live. He played a relatively short set sadly, but it was still totally mesmerizing. I just didn't want it to end.

I talked to him briefly after the show (man is he tall when you're standing right next to him!), and even though his most recent album, "The Black Path," was just released, he apparently already has a whole new album's worth of material demoed and ready to be recorded. I'll be keeping an eye out for that one next year for sure.

And for those of you who missed last night's performance, he's playing a FREE show tonight at the legendary Sidewalk Cafe, and he'll be able to play a longer set. He goes on at 10pm. Go see him now before he gets famous like previous sidewalk cafe alums Beck, Regina Spektor and Kimya Dawson. Then you can brag to all your friends about how you saw him when he was just starting out.

Alaska in Winter @ 92Y Tribeca

On Saturday night I headed down to 92Y Tribeca, an interesting artsy space that I had never even heard of until the Alaska in Winter show that I attended there. It seems to be owned by the YMCA and it's a cool multi-use art space, with a coffee shop and a bar and all sorts of fun stuff.

First up was The Rural Alberta Advantage. As you can probably guess, they are Canadian. They're an interesting mix of singer-songwriter and dance music and they had a good energy, albeit a rather laid-back, unassuming Canadian one. Lead singer Paul Banwatt's voice reminds me somewhat of Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy.

The headlining act was Alaska In Winter, AKA Brandon Bethancourt, who was rather ill during his performance and had to stop periodically to cough. I have to say I was very intrigued by his performance and the amount of work that must've gone into it. Every song has video in the background of himself playing just about every instrument (he refers to "the band" a lot, which always got a chuckle from the audience). And yes, he actually plays almost all of those instruments (except for the violin and trumpet, which he faked decently well but not quite well enough to fool me). He changes costumes with the video so that he always matches the video. He's very cute and he has a pretty good stage presence (which I can only assume would be better if he weren't sick). His music definitely had most of the audience shaking it by the end of the set. All in all, it was a very good show.

The Republic Tigers

As of late, I just can't stop listening to The Republic Tigers, and since they will be making an appearance at SXSW this year, I felt like that was a fine enough excuse to post about them today. If you're not familiar, the Republic Tigers are an experimental indie pop/rock band that in my mind are the perfect blend of Radiohead meets early Coldplay with a dash of The Bravery, and their latest album Keep Color is a masterpiece. They manage to perfectly balance dreamy with rock and organic with synthetic, just adding enough layers to keep things interesting and your head bobbing. If I had realized that I had them in my iTunes collection earlier, they would've been on a lot of my lists last year. I'm sorry, my bad. Here, let me make it up to you.

Missy Higgins @ The Chart House

Missy Higgins performed an intimate concert at the Chart House yesterday, hosted by Cities 97 to help raise money for the Special Olympics Polar Plunge. Before the show I was able to chat with Missy about her going-ons now that she's moved to the States. Missy says she's currently just "touring and riding out this America thing for now" cause the girl loves to tour (check tour dates below), but "I've got a few little things on the backline, and I'm not sure when the new album's gonna be." She recently recorded a cover of Roxy Music's "More Than This" for Warner Brothers and wrote a song entitled "Run So Fast" for a new film. When asked about her new home-away-from-home in L.A., Missy said, "It's really fun - its a fun place to live, like there's so much good music and so much good art and really interesting people move to Los Angeles, they've all got a really interesting story" but later stated that outside of L.A., she's spent the most time in Minneapolis(!).

Missy sang three songs for the live broadcast and then gave the rest of us an intimate performance, saying "just shout out what you want to hear." Armed with her guitar and a keyboard, Missy put on one heck of a show. Her vocals were flawless, strong and free, and she sang with absolute conviction. Her songs are honest and straight from the heart- when I asked her about her songwriting technique she told me that she doesn't really like to sit down and record while she's songwriting because she finds it interferes with the "in the moment experience" of expressing an emotion through a song. This is probably a key reason why her songs never feel overworked. She's also one of those artists who are adept at maintaining good rapport with the audience - each song had a story and she kept things chill and upbeat. She ended up singing a total of 10 songs before her manager told her it was time to go, but it was a great experience and I look forward to seeing her again in March when she comes back to Minneapolis.

Guilt By Association, Vol. 2 Celebration

Hello from sunny Florida! Even though we're experiencing a "cold front" here, it's still in the 60s... Jealous? You know you are... But don't worry, I'm bringing the warm weather back to NY with me on Friday. Anyway, on to the music!

On Saturday night, I had the privilege to see Takka Takka, Jukebox the Ghost and Robbers on High Street play at Williamsburg Music Hall to celebrate the release of Guilt By Association, volume 2, the second installment in a series of albums of pop classics covered by current hot indie bands (remember that great Petra Haden cover of Don't Stop Believin'? That was from the first installment).

Brooklyn band Takka Takka was up second (after Lowry, whom I didn't make it in time to see). They started off strong, with high energy dance pop numbers and did a good job of getting the crowd pumped. Lead singer Gabe Levine is a pretty charismatic front man, but I have to say I wish the rest of the band looked like they were having more fun most of the time. I guess it's that whole hipster disinterested thing that they're going for.

Next up was one of my favorite bands, Jukebox the Ghost. They put on a fun show and they had a crazy huge fan base in the audience who was singing along to every song (myself included). I was really excited to see so many people show up for them. They're really talented, and I love their playful music (and their playful performance style too). Their song also happens to be my favorite on the GBA2 album - a cover of Ace of Bases' A Beautiful Life. Supposedly they were originally going to do Livin' La Vida Loca by Ricky Martin, but they decided that would be too embarrassing and so they switched to Ace of Base instead.

Lastly was Robbers on High Street, who were poppier than I expected them to be. I have to admit, I wasn't all that familiar with their music except for the rather more rock 'n' roll Japanese Girls, which was playing at every dance party I went to about 2 or 3 years ago. They were still fun though and they had a good energy. And hey, I love poppy music. Unfortunately I couldn't stay for the whole set because I was sick and had to get up early the next morning. But I think I managed to catch most of it.

As always, an excessive amount of pictures can be found here.

And here are a few mp3s from Guilt By Association, Volume 2 (purchasable on iTunes here):

Hey Ocean!

Hey Ocean! are just fun. A colorful blend of pop and funk with a bit of mischievous flavor dashed in, this four-piece group of energy are starting to make a splash (obvious pun not intended), and with a slot at this year's SXSW, you're sure to be hearing much more of them in the near future. As of late they are working extra hard on touring and making as much music as possible in the hopes of skyrocketing to fame, which I commend and fully support. The most surprising and welcoming part of Hey Ocean!'s sound is the fact that they come across as a west coast carribean-influenced band as opposed to one that hails from Canada, with grooves founded in reggae and funk. Their music videos will be coming out soon for their latest album It's Easier To Be Someone Else, and honestly, I'm intrigued to see how sassy they are. Check them out.

Predictions: Apple Commercial Music

Hannah Georgas is a quirky Canadian indie/pop songwriter whose debut EP The Beat Stuff was just released nationwide January 27th. Her songs are the infectious sort, with toe-tapping hooks, lyrics that perfectly dance with the folksy strums of the guitar ("Let's talk about Lo-ah-ah-ah-ve, let's laugh about li-ah-ah-ah-fe") and topped with the delicate yet prominent female songwriter voice thats not afraid to go crazy. The EP is phenomenal, but the first time I heard Hannah, it was just the song "All I Need" that drew me in. The song starts out with the simple gentle plucks of the ukulele, gradually met with the glockenspiel and a few low chords from the piano. Things start going from there, as the drums come pulsing into the song after 3 minutes to start the cascading whirlwind of indie pop punch that honestly I just can't get enough of. Although "The Beat Stuff" is an equal contender, I immediately thought this song would make for the perfect Apple commercial, and so here we are today.

But then there was moment in time when I was feeling extremely dorky and decided that it was not enough to envision such a commercial, I needed to actually create it for your viewing pleasure. So enjoy the mock-up below. By the way, I recently got a call from Hannah's manager, and it looks like a few steps have already been taken to try to get this to become a reality. Nothing definite yet, but who knows, this could actually be coming to a television near you.
